Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode - What It Means for SEO
Google reported changes to AI overviews and a new powerful AI Mode that will be integrated into Google Search. What does this look like? And how will it affect search results?

Google has released some news about expanded AI Overviews and a new mode in search - AI Mode. This is how the news came out on X:

1. About Expanded Overviews:
When you type in a query on Google, it will start showing the “Show more” button like this:

When you click on the “Show more” button, you will find more detailed answers to your question.
Google is calling this method of answering the questions the “query fan-out” technique.
When you ask a question, you get the first precise answer and then a longer and detailed response based on various sources in the expanded overview.

What this means for brands relying on SEO:
As AI Overviews get longer, more real estate in search is getting occupied meaning organic search results are getting pushed lower and lower.
However, the brands that are continuously building their authority online through expert content, PR mentions, and backlinks will continue to dominate the AI overviews section as linked sources.

2. Google is also testing AI Mode.
Basically, when you visit Google, AI Mode will be part of the sections you see in addition to “All”, “Images”, “Videos”, “Web”, etc.
So you will see something like this:

When you go into AI Mode you will find an interface to chat with Gemini 2.0 and dive deeper into a topic. Think about the Chatgpt chat function, but now available on Google Search.

The most important point is that AI Mode will enable users to ask complex, multi-part questions and ask follow-ups to dig deeper. It will keep looking through the search results to give you the best plan or answers, but where it cannot help you conclusively, it will present you with the top 10 web search results so that you can dig deeper on your own.
What does this mean for SEO:
This is basically a chatty way of engaging users in search. You will need to check that your content provides real value so that it might be included as a credible source when users are chatting back and forth in AI Mode.
Google is emphasizing that expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (popularly known as E-A-T) will continue to be used as a power meter to determine which content is helpful and can be used by Gemini 2.0 in AI Mode.
