Don’t believe the hype, Chatgpt is still far from giving Google Search a real fight

What: You read that right. Marketers are super confused right now. SEO professionals are seeing wannabe AI pros saying on LinkedIn how SEO doesn’t matter anymore. Is that really true though? The data says otherwise.
The data: Google search is still 373x bigger than ChatGpt and all other AI models. In a report published by SparkToro, Google Search actually grew by 20% in 2024. In fact, Google saw 14billion searches per day, while Chatgpt saw 37million searches per day translating to about 0.25% of the market share, Bing has 4%, DuckDuckGo has 0.75% and Yahoo 1.35% .
What next: Chatgpt is still growing. Perhaps the AI engine will eat into Google’s market share even more. But so far, it’s not even close.
What should you be doing? More SEO. All AI engines seem to be relying on brand authority defined by search engines so far - which means SEO is still the foundational layer you need to be working on.
Just one worry: Even though Google Search still dominates search, more than 60% of searches resulted in no clicks. Which means Google AI overviews have properly eaten into the clicks that Google would send websites. How do you optimize for Google AI Overviews? Anyone have any ideas? AI Overviews are coming to YouTube too

What: If you are a content creator on YouTube who thought AI overviews would only be a Google Search thing, you were wrong. AI is getting tested to start appearing on YouTube soon.
Details: Google is currently testing AI overviews for a section of the YouTube premium members in the US. This will basically be a carousel that shows up when users search for videos on YouTube. YouTube will use AI to highlight clips that are most useful or relevant to your query.
What to keep an eye on: We don’t know yet if this will result to more or less clicks to creators. So we can’t quite tell but that’s something to keep an eye on. If Google Search’s AI Overviews is anything to go by, creators should be worried.

What: The information (subscription needed) has obtained internal OpenAI documents that suggest Chatgpt is planning to launch Ads in Chatgpt for free users within the next year. The speculated revenue expectation from ads and other product offerings will be $125 billion. Yep, that’s good money.
Why this is ironic: In Sam Altman’s own words, “I kind of hate ads just as an aesthetic choice. I think ads needed to happen on the internet for a bunch of reasons, to get it going, but it’s a momentary industry. The world is richer now. I like that people pay for ChatGPT and know that the answers they’re getting are not influenced by advertisers.”
He also added, “And I don’t know, we have a very simple business model and I like it, and I know that I’m not the product. I know I’m paying and that’s how the business model works. And when I go use Twitter or Facebook or Google or any other great product but ad-supported great product, I don’t love that, and I think it gets worse, not better, in a world with AI.”
What now? Should we all ask Sam what changed? Maybe free users became too many? Maybe “kind of hate ads” was a more flexible way of saying “not sure”?
Turns out, for a company as big as Chatgpt, it’s joining other big companies like Meta, Google, and TikTok who are providing relatively ‘free’ platforms. Reality is hitting that surviving without ads is easier said than done.
