A lot of people make one big mistake with keyword research when they launch their website.

Let’s use the example of a resume builder website that helps people build resumes using AI.

Most people would go to their favorite keyword tool and search for the keyword “resume” to see what pops out.

You get top keywords with lots of search volume (sv) like the ones above. You get excited because you are thinking, “that volume is so good, when i rank I will get millions of visitors.”

While it’s true the volume is good, it’s also true that your new or low authority website does not stand a chance in ranking for these keywords.

Why? Let us look at the “KD” column which stands for “keyword difficulty”.

The KD is measured in the range of 0-100. The higher the score, the more difficult it is to rank.

Let’s click on any keyword in the screenshot above to put this into perspective. In this case, the data for “resume builder”:

There you go. It is “super hard” to rank for “resume builder” when you first launch your resume builder website.

By analyzing the websites ranking top 10 for this keyword, the tool approximates that you will need about 835 backlinks in order to rank in top 10.

To get 835 backlinks will not be an easy task. Think about it, we are one of the most affordable backlink sellers out there. If you purchased 835 backlinks from us at $30 per link, it would cost you $25,050. It is not cheap and some agencies will charge you up to $150k for the same.

It will cost you way more time and probably over 3 years if you decided to get 835 backlinks by yourself.

As you can already tell, this keyword is just not attainable at this point. And that goes for every keyword in the list we are looking at.

What should you do instead? Target low difficulty keywords.

Let’s add some filters and see what we get.

For our clients with new websites, we like to target keyword difficulty of 15% and below, with a search volume of 100 and above.

And now we have close to 32 keywords. We even got some keywords whose difficulty to rank is below 10%.

These are the holy grail.

Let’s take a look at the expanded detail of the first keyword “LinkedIn resume builder” and see more information.

This keyword is categorized as very easy to rank, with a keyword difficulty of 9% and about 10 backlinks required to rank for it.

10 backlinks from us would cost you $320. But you’re probably asking, “it has a search volume of 3.6k only per month, that’s not much?”

Well, that’s true. It’s not much for a high authority website but for a new website, this is very good. And global search volume is always higher.

We have ranked keywords that said search volume was 100 per month only to end up with thousands of visitors per month to that particular page.

In this particular case, the tool says the keyword has a global search volume of 10k per month, which for a new website would be quite decent if it were to rank for that.

Once we have a list of 30-50 low difficulty keywords, we take on the next step. I will share what the next step is in the next newsletter on Monday. So stay tuned for that one!
